Amy Coney Barrett’s Nomination to the Supreme Court

Barrett has a long history in the Justice System prior to her nomination for Supreme Court Justice

At the time of writing, Amy Coney Barrett is President Trump’s nomination for the Supreme Court. For the past 3 years she has served as a Judge on the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, ruling on several cases. She has also taught for Notre Dame Law School since 2002. She is also a mother of 7 and a wife to Jesse Barrett. Judge Barret was born in 1972 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She went to Rhodes College in Memphis Tennessee, and graduated with a Bachelor in Arts. She then studied law at Notre Dame Law School where she graduated first in her class in 1997.

In her court rulings and votes, she has voted to restrict abortion rights and to uphold and expand gun rights. In 2019 Judge Barrett was opposed to a ban on gun possession by convicted felons, she indicate that the government should have to prove the felons were actually dangerous before taking away their 2nd amendment rights, on that case she wrote “Founding-era Legislators did not strip felons of the right to bear arms simply because of their status as felons.” Judge Barrett is an Originalist, believing that the constitution should be interpreted based on the views of it’s writers.

Judge Barret is a devout Catholic, some democratic senators have questioned whether or not her faith would interfere with her decisions as a judge, in 2017 she said, “It’s never appropriate for a judge to impose that judge’s personal convictions, whether they derive from faith or anywhere else, on the law.”

One can only assume the president picked Judge Barret for her background in law and conservative religious values.
