Meghan Trainor’s new hit song, Me Too, hit #53 on the billboards recently in the USA. In Australia, it peaked at number one on the ARIA charts, and in Canada and France at 3 and 56 on the charts.

We, again, interviewed a few people on the song, and how they know about it! Our interviewers: Lilly McIntyre, Mackenzie Meyerhofer, Tabatha Booty, Lydia Manguel, and Vasily Yevseyev asked students at JPEC these questions. We expect that no boys will have heard this song. These ‘pop’ type music songs don’t normally have a large male audience.

Have you heard Meghan Trainor’s new song, “Me Too”?

The answer was “Yes,” from Samantha Ulicny, Katelyn Provo, Lilly McIntyre, and Emma Kuhl.

However, no boys surveyed knew about Me Too. These sort of message spreading songs aren’t really reaching the male audience.

How did you like this new song?

“I think it’s… she’s kind of like ‘I’m better than you”. She’s singing really narcissistic.” Samantha Ulicny 8th grader starts.

“It’s annoying,” Emma Kuhl remarks.

“I don’t really like it, it’s annoying. Don’t offend me bro.” Katelyn Provo, 7th grader begins.

“Mmm, It’s okay. It’s not the greatest song I’ve ever heard, but it’s not the worst.” Lilly adds.

What do you think the meaning of “Me Too” is?

“About how she’s living life and really popular and how that automatically makes her better than everyone else. That’s not a good message to give to people” says Samantha. Honestly, the song does sound this way on the surface, but gloating is far from the intended meaning.

“I don’t know.” Emma continues. It sounds like a fun light song, sometimes no one even knows if there is a meaning.

“About being confident.” says Katelyn. Her answer is the closest so far.

“I think what she meant by the song, was that she’s confident that she’s beautiful.” Lilly also had a pretty straight forward answer.

Any other comments about her song?

“Overall, I think Meghan Trainor is a good singer, but some of her songs messages are very inappropriate and disgraceful.” Samantha wraps up.

“Meghan’s songs are very catchy and sound good, but the lyrics aren’t always clear.” Lilly finishes.

Actual Meaning:

All the ideas we heard were very agreeable, but Meghan Trainor was trying to convey a specific message. She wrote this song about self-love and confidence. Learning to accept yourself for who you are. This bubbly song may just sound like she’s bragging about her wealth and fame, but if you analyze the lyrics, it’s so much more.

If you ask a fan about her music they might say, “That’s totally a confidence poser. Like you go to the mirror every morning and say “I wish it was me.” or “I’m so beautiful.” Most people say it’s just about her bragging that she’s so popular and beautiful, but it’s for people that don’t think they are awesome. She wants them to feel better about themselves. We saw this same sort of pattern with our survey, that she thinks she’s all that, but people need to know the true message.

Music Video Controversy

On May 9, 2016 the music video for Me Too was released, but was later removed because of photo manipulation on Megan’s body to make her waist look slimmer [See Photo]. This contradicts the meaning of the song! On Snapchat Megan states, “I didn’t approve that video that went out into the world, I’m so embarrassed.”

The music video was then re-uploaded later as the unedited version. If you’re wondering what happens in the video, it starts with Megan waking up and singing the song in her bathroom mirror. She then puts a giraffe onesie on, and makes her way to her photo shoot. While trying on several outfits with her entourage. She then chooses a blue sequin dress and proceeds to dance with two other girls in a spotlit room.

The re-uploaded version has since reached over 203 million views on Youtube as of August 2016. This is not the first time celebrities have been photo-shopped; she’s just one of the few who called out the company who shot her music video, and fixed it. We suggest you watch this at home.

To Sum Things Up

Meghan Trainor is an “everybody is beautiful” activist. Like her one song ‘All About That Bass’ is saying that you don’t have to be skinny to be pretty. This message is promptly portrayed in Me Too. That you don’t have to a “barbie doll”, that you don’t have to change. Just be yourself!
