Coco, Disney's New Movie
Coco is the story of a 12 year old Mexican boy named Miguel. Far from being a royalty themed movie, Coco is all about De Los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. On this day some rituals include eating sugar skulls, decorating altars, and giving food and water to dead relatives. Coco takes this one step further, with Miguel and his dog being transported to the Land of the Dead. An interesting dynamic of the movie is that music is outlawed in Miguel’s family. Thus, it is ironic that he travels to the Land of the Dead by way of magic guitar. There, he discovers the secrets of his ancestry.
For now, there is only one teaser. However, because the release date is Thanksgiving 2017, there is still plenty of time for more. The animation stood out from the rest of the preview to some attentive viewers. When Miguel is playing the guitar, his fingers are on the correct strings, for the note that is playing. Though this may not seem impressive, it has never been done before. For example, Hank, the octopus from Finding Dory, is missing a tentacle because all eight would have been too hard to animate. Not only is Disney making animation history, but this is also their first movie with only Hispanic characters.
