Hawaii, The First State To Sue President Trump Over The New Travel Ban

Hawaii has become the first state to sue the trump administration over the updated travel ban, stating it would “disrupt families, harm Hawaii’s Muslim population, tourism and foreign students.”

Hawaii’s lawsuit was filed officially on Wednesday in a federal court located in Honolulu,Hawaii. The state had also attempted to file when Trump had originally enacted the travel ban, but due to other cases across the country, it was put on hold.

The revised travel ban halts people from 6 predominantly muslim countries from receiving visas, and also temporarily stops the refugee program.

State attorney general Doug Chin also stated that the travel ban would negatively affect the tourism industry and private businesses, and that it was the same policy as the original ban just “dressed up differently”.

Chin remarked that the ban brought up distressing memories of the Chinese Exclusion Acts and the enforcement of Japanese internment and martial law.

District Judge Derrick Watson has approved Hawaii’s request to continue the case, and a hearing has been set for march 15th, the day before Trump’s order is to go into effect.
