Study Finds Vitamin D, The Sunshine Supplement, Can Prevent Common Colds

According to the British Medical Journal or BMJ, taking a daily dose of Vitamin D reduces your chances of getting a respiratory tract infection. The study had 25 controlled trials with over 11,000 participants worldwide, all had significantly reduced rates of becoming ill.

It is said that vitamin D increases levels of antimicrobial peptides in the lungs. Antimicrobial peptides have been shown to commit wound repair and immunomodulation along with defense against infection.

Scientist has long questioned whether or not respiratory infections had a direct correlation with a deficiency in vitamin D. Previous inquires into the matter used ineffective methods such as giving bolus doses of the supplement, this resulted in having inadequate results.

Those who had the highest deficiency of vitamin D had the greatest benefit. The participants whose levels of vitamin D were extremely low had their chances of getting a respiratory tract infection reduced by 50%. Respiratory infections account for millions of emergency hospital visits in the winter months due to less sun exposure, diurnal doses of vitamin D could have a major impact on the healthcare system.
